What is required to transfer gun ownership from a private party to me (a sworn peace officer)? Do I need to do anything special? I have never bought a gun before, and only have my department issue. Thanks for the input.

PS, does anyone know how much 15 round SIG 226 mags go for?

I would call the California State police and ask them. In MD all I have to do is show up at any state police barrack with the person I am selling/ buying, to/ from and have a check for $10.00. Im assuming you live in CA so I would also assume CA laws are different from MD laws.

Check out this site you might find what you are looking for and more.

You need to go to any shop that is FFL (Federal Firearm License), fill out the private party transfer paperwork.

There will be an transfer fee ($35), plus whatever the gun shop tries to tack on. I would call around first to make sure that they are not charging "administrative fees" tacked on with them processing the paperwork.

I'm assuming that the caliber you're asking about is 9mm. Those 15 round mags should go around $30 NEW, slightly cheaper used.

The good news is that you don't have to wait the 10 day CA waiting period. You can take ownership right there as long as you show your creds as a full-time sworn officer.

You are still required to wait the 10 day waiting period unless you have a letter from your department.

You're right. This changed. Thank you.

12078. (a) (1) The waiting periods described in Sections 12071 and
12072 shall not apply to the deliveries, transfers, or sales of
firearms made to persons properly identified as full-time paid peace
officers as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of
Title 3 of Part 2, provided that the peace officers are authorized by
their employer to carry firearms while in the performance of their
duties. Proper identification is defined as verifiable written
certification from the head of the agency by which the purchaser or
transferee is employed, identifying the purchaser or transferee as a
peace officer who is authorized to carry firearms while in the
performance of his or her duties, and authorizing the purchase or
transfer. The certification shall be delivered to the dealer at the
time of purchase or transfer and the purchaser or transferee shall
identify himself or herself as the person authorized in the
certification. The dealer shall keep the certification with the
record of sale. On the date that the delivery, sale, or transfer is
made, the dealer delivering the firearm shall transmit to the
Department of Justice an electronic or telephonic report of the
transaction as is indicated in subdivision (b) or (c) of Section
12077.

syphon,

Dont bother wasting your time trying to get a letter to bypass the waiting period.....most unit commanders wont do it anymore......even for a duty weapon

I bought two extra mags, for my P226, for about 80 bucks at LAPRAAC. They go about the same for the 220, I bought 4 extra ones for my 220 since its only an eight rounder, but I love both guns.

I sold my USP 45 to a coworker and both of us went to oak tree shooting range in newhall, he paid the $35.00 and waited the ten days and the gun was his. I just got paperwork stating the gun is no longer mine.

I love my P226 9mm. I usually hit where I'm aiming. Recoil is nice. Feels great in my hand. With my Glock 22 I always seems to shoot high.

syphon, why stop at 15? They make 20 round mags :) There's about an inch or so of plastic on the end of my sad 10 round mags :(

I have 2 P220s and love them as well, one of our TOs carries a dept issued P226 in 9mm. Always wanted to try them.

How do they compare against each other?

I have the P226 elite which has the short reset trigger, and its awesome. The P226 has less recoil and with the smoother trigger I have some real nice groups. I am probably going to send my P220 (to Sig Sauer) to get the SRT trigger, but I like the fact that I could use the same holster for both guns.

My brother in law gave me a handgun last year. All I did was go the the DOJ website, download and print the gun registration form. Sent the form to DOJ with a check for 19.00. About 2 months later I received a confirmation letter from the DOJ confirming the transfer ownership of the gun. Took all of 5 minutes.

Don't know why you would have to go thru FFL dealer.

While in custody I waited THREE weeks for my captain to approve and sign a firearm request letter for a P220. During patrol, I went about getting my personal rifle authorization a little differently: I knew that the front office supervisor (female civilian) was in tight with the captain so I paid her a compliment one day. The next day, I filled out the paperwork and asked her where it went. She told me the captain needed to approve it and that she could handle it lickity-split. Within one minute I had my signed letter which I gladly presented to the guys at Pro-Force in Brea.

Luckily the captain didn't kick it back and make me go through the chain!

Inter family transfers don't need to go through FFL. Private sales do though.

I'm surprised some people have trouble getting letters for 10 day waits and rifles. I just go down to my range and it takes two minutes.

I would ask at your station what the attitude is.

The longest I ever waited was 2 days to get a letter for a firearm purchase, that even included some that were not on the "Approved for Duty Carry" list.

The 'attitude' isnt at the station level.....its at the headquarters level........hint: you have to run for office to get the position....

Does any agencies limit the amount of pistols or long guns you purchase for your own collection?

I have a shopping list ready...

once you are hired, it shouldnt matter......some agencies will give you the stink eye during backgrounds if you have 'too many' firearms......

Oh Lord. I have 3 handguns and 1 shotgun...is that too many already?

I read somewhere on here that during psych, you are likely to be DQ'd because you own a firearm as a civilian.

Kinda depends on what agency you work for. In Ventura County (SO) it might differ from LASD. The agency I worked for would give us a "waiver letter" within a couple of days and it was no big deal. We'd go to the "Operations Office", fill out a form letter with the weapon and dealer info and it would be signed by our COP within a day or two at the most. Every place is different and not all chief or sheriffs are as anti-gun as others.

I had several firearms in my collection (mostly long guns) when I was hired. Did not cause me any issues.

Of course I AM a collector, and many of them are / were handed down through the family over the years.

Thats 'cause you are overreacting to the recoil- 9mm just doesn't have the recoil of a .40 cal

That's right. Like they say, practice makes perfect. After I've been shooting for a while I'll start to anticipate the recoil. Also the Glock is very light with its plastic frame. I have a SIG 229 with both .40 and .357 SIG barrels and I shoot better with either of those rounds compared to the Glock. My friend that's a Deputy says I need to use the Glock sights differently. It didn't exactly make sense. I don't know, I think I just need more practice.

I wish .40 cal was cheaper to shoot.

Well how many weapons is too many?. Over the years, they just seem to accumulate. I own several, from .380 up to .45 and I'm not a gun nut. I do appreciate the complex engineering and the fine artistry of well made solid steel handgun. None of that plastic junk for me. The good thing about steel is the more you shoot it the better it gets, within reason of course.

No problem. Place them in a box and pack them securely. I'll PM you with my FFL's address and take them off your hands. ;)

AND.... bring a letter from your Chief / Sheriff if you want the firearm right there and then OTHERWISE, you will pick it up in 10 to 15 days......

(all private person transfer / sales rules apply without the letter from the Department Head or his/her designee).

around 30-35 for a mag.
