I am going to go take written exam for SDPD real soon and have a question about their hiring process, personal history statement and/or psych evaluation to be exact.

I graduated from SDSU in Criminal Justice major in 2006. I applied to become a correctional officer and passed everything but the initial psych interview. In the written part of the psych eval, I self-reported that I had 5150 incident on me while I was at SDSU back in 2003, going through money/financial aid problem along with other problems I had at the time in my life w/o my parents or anyone to help/support me. My roommate at the time called police on me. My 5150 report did not indicate that I needed to see someone or take any medication or anything like that. They basically kept me at the mental hospital for 2 days until they felt like I completely calmed down. This was a completely isolated incident as I do not have any previous incident like this before or after this. After submitting the report from mental hospital here in San Diego to PSB and had an interview with one of the state-hired psychologist, then they denied me. So I appealed the decision and saw a psychologist of my choice and now waiting to hear back from PSB.

Meanwhile I want to apply for SDPD but worry that if I report 5150 to them that they may deny me. Is it feasible that I do NOT report 5150 to SDPD? Or they will find out so its best to self-report it? I innocently forgot to report the 5150 on the first part of written psych test with corrections and they did not find anything, it was only on the second written psych test that I self-reported the incident and they asked me to send them a copy of medical report from the mental hospital where I had to stay for 2 days back in 2003.

Any opinion is appreciated.

You will be asked to report any mental health issues in your past. This would classify as one, obviously. Whether they find it or not, that (all the forms you filled out about your past) will be a portion of your poly. So they could find it there. Otherwise, you'll be starting off your career in a dishonest fashion even if they don't for whatever reason.

List it. Man up.

You are not the only one with skeletons in your closet. Think about the lot of Service Members who are coming back from war with their own demons. You might need to put a few more years between you and the incident. No matter what, be up front. If in the end this turns out to be the wrong profession for you, chock it up to a life lesson and know that you are a better man for it.

If a form asks for it- report it. Otherwise they will reject you for lying. SDPD will find it... or any local agency in SD County. And now any agency any where because you reported it on one investigation, and they generally will look that up too.

I say give it a shot and apply. I don't think they are going to DQ from psych just for that. I's five years old. Just show that you were stressed out, have found better ways to deal with stress, was young at the time.. blah blah blah. If you have good steady employment and no other issues I think you will be ok

I remember a bill being passed where you can't own a gun for 5-7 years if you have been on a 5150 hold for DTS/DTO.. I'm assuming you can't be an officer either since you can't own a firearm. Correct me if I'm wrong..

I found the following article:

Under California law, you are not permitted to possess or purchase a firearm for a period of five years after your commitment, unless you request a special hearing to have your rights restored.

It's been 5 years so on that, I should be ok.
