I'm currently a PO in Orange County and looking to lateral to a PD in Westchester. Are there any Westchester PO's on the site or anyone that knows what PD's accepts lateral transfer from Orange County.

did you sign up for the westchester police exam? If you take the exam they will accept the lateral I believe.

I believe most PD's in the county take laterals, minus the cities. Call some of the PD's that your interested in and send out some resume's. I'm pretty sure Westchester PS accepts laterals.

From what I have been told by numerous cops is you take the test to get on the list and then you can get hired/transfer if a department is interested. Without taking the test, wouldn't you be SOL?

You have to take the test. You can't just go into a civil service job without ever being on a list for it. That's against CS law.

You have to take the written exam and agility, they will hire you when they reach your list number.

No it's not. Civil service law provides for police officers originally hired off of a civil service list; ie on a job in Orange County; can apply for either a lateral transfer or a resignation/reinstatement to another department without taking the written test or physical abilty test. I spoke with the Westchester County Department of Civil Service who confirm the ability to lateral transfer in Westchester. It just depends on if your coming from a job that has the ability to lateral and if the department you want to go to accepts laterals. The main departments that cannot lateral are State Troopers, NYPD, and SUNY Police.
