Just wondering if anybody has signed up for this, $100 filing fee though, top pay is 98,953.73. Filing period ends Ocotber 17th, and the test is on Saturday, November 15th. If no one is familiar with Long Island, it's on a island below Oceanside, and Island Park. Here's the website,

on your applications you put down other tests you are taking and the score on 1 exam counts for all. This is explained on the state/LB CS website.

Oh and the Application is a total 22 pages

The actual application appears to only be four pages, while the rest of it is all civil service EEOC, workmans comp and discrimination poicies. Thanks for letting us know about the test. I usually check their site religiously but haven't in quite some time. I doubt that they will hire any of us non-sworn people at that. Whenever they announce that they hired someone on their website its usually a former NYPD officer. . . . . .ahh and I thought I was done with civil service applications for 2008

krasah, your welcome, found out from a friend who taking the LIRR into Long Beach and so the cops with a booth explaining that they were hiring. Your right the last class, whenever that was, was a good percentage of ex-NYPD. For me the cheapest tests were Pennsylvania State Police, and NYPD, didn't cost a thing, most expensive was Nassau County Police, $100, and Rhode Island which really was only $53.

NYSPP?

without a doubt. I was there once before and hope I can go back. It really is the best kept secret of NYS. Just dont fool yourself about the training. They lose about 40% before graduation. I hope the funding is there in '08 and I get in again but Im taking other tests along the way just in case or else if I had a guranteed spot I wouldent even be looking.

Great Dept. I have a bunch of friends many former NYPD that work there. It is very hard to get into, nad they hire mostly NYPD so they do not have to foot the academy bill.... about 100 officers in all. Busy, really busy in the summer, or at least it used to be, lotta bar fights, but it has cleaned up in the past few years.

I took the test many years ago, and got like a 92, never was called.

They also give preference to in town applicants, or at least they used to.

I was just about to sign up for the exam and then i looked on my schedule that my only weekend overtime in the NYPD Academy is November 15th. Makes me think that they did this on purpose because i know there are other exams that day too...ridiculous.

They do seem to hire pretty infrequently too. 1 officer here, 2 there. Also on the announcement it said that the contract had expired in june of this year

Especially if you get on with Hempstead or Freeport. . . . .Welcome to "port- knox" and the "stead". I just thought it was funny how kids in high school used to try to make the towns badder then they really are. Although there are defiantly very serious crimes that do occur. If i had my choice of any towns, Freeport, Hempstead or Long Beach just for the variety of calls that you could receive.

Yup. . . how could i forget the the big bad "Velt". Although I have seen freeport cruisers in Roosevelt, but that's probably because they were responding to calls that were close to the boarder. Well being on the list couldn't hurt john. They may just pick him up with 3 years on.

Where on the Long Beach Police application?

All it says in the exam announcement is you need to notify a department you are taking two exams.......Does not actually say who to contact and there is no space to fill it out...

I guess I will call them before sending them $100....

Here are some examples: Westchester Co. I sent them a letter, rockland county gives you a separate form to use for cross-filing, and for mount vernon I just listed it in the additional information section of the application.

Hope this helps

I'm going to assume that they are referring to the one in three rule, where they choose three candidates to process for one spot, however its just a guess.

Gbotj, you're absolutely right. I hate when people act like Long Island is some prissy little suburb where everyone has a white picket fence and nothing happens, crime is everywhere. There are certain places in Freeport, Hempstead and Roosevelt that are pretty rough.

Long Beach does have its share of problems because when all the gang bangers want to "escape" they go to long beach and act like bloody fools there.

I'm a Aux. Police officer in Long Beach and I don't hear too much going on... Seems like a easy job after leaving the NYPD. Summer is busy but in the winter sometimes I think the radio is broke because you might not hear anything for a while. Most of the calls are (blocked driveway, kids making noise,911 hang up,etc...)The highest rank is Lt. and its hard to advance. Some guys there been on patrol for 8 or 9yrs.

Advancement is not such a spectacular thing. The only reason why so many NYPD are so eager to advance is so that they can put food on the table. If Long Beach is going to pay you a great wage to do the work of a police officer why would you want to advance. A Sgt is no longer a cop... He's an officer worker in a car handling administrative tasks (BTW being a supervisor is not bad thing.....that is not my point) My point is if your doing what is your dream job and getting a great wage... Why change?? Additionally LBPD police officers work 4 on 4 off .. when you become a supervisor you MAY not keep that same schedule..
The same also goes for Nassau /Suffolk/ Port Authority/ TBTA (gboti) ... If you love what your doing and your getting paid great to do it.. you have no reason to advance into what you did not want to do...

Everyone's goals are different. As for Me I like to get as much as I can out of life.I love being a Aux. Officer but its time to step it up.A cop I know that does the beach patrol said that he's been riding up and down the beach for about 10yrs and he's tired of it.He said he spent 10yrs in the NYPD so he's about to retire. So for me it would be a good job later on.(And your right!) the pay is good but I'm young.I need some action....

the exam itself was harder then some of the other tests ive taken. question were very long and i was very tired and had a hard time concentrating.

Long Beach Civil Service Commission certifies payroll
BY LAURA RIVERA | laura.rivera@newsday.com
February 21, 2009
In a step toward fixing its broken civil service system - to keep politics out of public-sector jobs - the Long Beach Civil Service Commission has said it certified a payroll of about 200 city employees under its jurisdiction for the first time in more than 30 years.

A member of the state commission that oversees the local body praised its effort to undertake the certification, which verifies that employees serve in a position and earn a salary set by state rules.

"There is at least currently a genuine commitment to go forward," Nancy Groenwegen, president of the state Civil Service Commission, said at a meeting in Albany last week.

But the state commission signaled in the report earlier this month that it hasn't seen proof that the certification was carried out properly and gave Long Beach 18 months to address other long-standing problems. The state agency has the authority to remove Long Beach civil service commissioners from office. The commission is responsible for about 600 employees, according to local commission chairman Jim Hennessy.
Since the 1970s, the city's merit system has been rated by the state Civil Service Commission as one of New York's most poorly managed.

A 2004 state audit showed the city could not prove that top scorers on civil service exams had been offered jobs, as required, or show how many of its employees had been properly hired or promoted.

The city also had changed job titles to give temporary, or provisional, workers permanent jobs after they had failed civil service tests.

"Civil service was used as a political tool to keep people in line ... the exact opposite of what it's supposed to be used for," Hennessy said.

In 2004, as president of the first Republican-led City Council in 32 years, Hennessy helped appoint a new commission.

But the commission's efforts to overhaul the system faltered amid high turnover in leadership posts. It had made scant progress in implementing the state's 16 recommendations until it voted to certify the city's payroll on Feb. 5.

"There is a lot more work to do," Hennessy said.

Among the recommendations yet to be addressed are certifying payrolls for the school district and the housing authority, which together employ about 400 people under civil service rules; ordering exams for all provisional employees; and updating the employment history of each worker.

The state has yet to complete its review of the payroll certification, said David Ernst, spokesman for the state Department of Civil Service. "But neither have we received information indicating that they've corrected flaws that we found in [their employee] records," Ernst said.

The state commission also suggested that Long Beach consider turning over the administration of its civil service system to Nassau County. Hennessy said the city would consider that option if it were unable to make the necessary reforms.
