So I have been dealing with shin splints FOREVER. My PT finally decided the only thing left was to get a new pair of orthotics that are stiffer, since my old ones were obviously not working. Here is my question...

I started to wear them, ran a bit with them (not more than 1.25 miles) and after each run my shin splints are BAD (worse then before) and last for a day or two. My PT guessing that its just a break in period. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? Is this just a break in issue?

Thanks

Hmmm...I haven't heard of them for shinsplints before, but I do wear some pretty serious custom orthotics to correct overpronation and a short leg. The break-in period for a new pair is always annoying (and sometimes painful!). Your practitioner should have you start out wearing them for only 1/2 hour, then daily increasing that amount by 1/2 hour until you are wearing them all day. If you just BAM! start wearing them constantly, your body is going to get very angry.

As for running with them, wait until you've been wearing them full-time otherwise for a couple of weeks. Start out with brisk walking for a few days, then begin running just short periods inbetween walks. Your body needs time to adjust to "orthotics while running" just as it adjusted to them initially...running on them is a whole different ballgame.

Keep in mind that the orthotics may need to be adjusted based on how your body responds...don't be afraid to speak up and have 'em fixed if they don't work well for you.

Have you taken the shoe insert before putting in the orthotics. I've been wearing custom Ortoho's for about 5 years now and don't even realize they're in the shoe.
