View Full Version : Academy boot recommendations??
I would assume the qualities needes would be
1. EASY to polish if possible,
2. A zipper side in addition to the laces,
3. lightweight
Any specific recommendations or graduated who would have purchased differently before the academy?

Check with your academy BEFORE you buy boots......see if they even allow them......

That is good advice. Our academy requires regular uniform shoes (and not Corfams) that can take a shine. We were only allowed to wear boots at the range.
As for what boots to get, I have been very happy with Danner boots for almost 19 years. I am on my third pair. Expensive, but worth the dough.

The heavier, the better:D

on the academy list of things needed were boots and running shoes. there is an orientation soon, ( week before). I'll try and get some detail there.

I've been told Thorogood (sp?) boots are comfortable, durable, and preshined in the box.

Ok....if they will let you wear boots, then I would suggest not spending a bunch on your 'academy' pair, as they are going to get thrashed.....
find a pair that is as comfortable as possible, and as lightweight as possible.....once you find something in your price range that is acceptable to the academy, buy TWO pairs.......that way you will have a backup pair already shined up and ready to go......

Anyone know of a good pair that also reinforces the heel area (so it doesn't wear out as fast?)

I wear 5.11 tactical side zip. I love them. They are like wearing tennis shoes.

Showboat--you asked about the Thorogoods..well, that is the brand that I had in the academy. I cant find the exact model # online, but lapolicegear.com has a pair that looks exactly the same (thorogood 834-6111), except for the zipper (mine are lace ups, no zipper). Those boots rule. EASY to shine and keep looking like glass, comfortable, and the soles held up great.
Great advice from LA DEP ref. having two pairs of boots. I currently have three pair....the daily use magnums and two pair shined up and ready to go...you never know.

i think you need to start treating yourself to better tennis shoes.
I don't know, bud. I love my ATAC coyote brown (I'll be buying some black ones shortly) 5.11 boots. They feel like I'm walking on air. My only complaint is if you plan on doing any SERIOUS hiking in them. They don't offer enough support.
