Ive been there almost 3 years. I take home on average 1400 every two weeks.
That includes Med Insurance for the family taken out, and I also put $425 (before tax) every two weeks into deferred comp....
If i pull an OT shift here and there, it goes up to about 2k.

thanks Mtoledo & SoCalSheriff for your replies..this helps...
another question, does college count towards your intermediate and advanced post? or does it account for training hours only.

I'm trying to get hired by RSO also. As for college, I think it's 2.5% increase with a BA.

how plentiful is the OT at RSO?

depends on the station. Some are working 10 +2, others have 2 mandatory OT shifts a pay period. Others dont have much at all. It's there if you want it or are willing to work another station...

Yes....college degrees or credits count towards earning an intermediate or advanced post. See this link for the amount of college, years in service and training units required for each certificate.... look around page 6 or 7

I was almost going to say that 1400 every 2 weeks is a little sad, and thought they paid more...
...wow, good job putting that much per pay period into retirement!

I have to. I am only going to work this job for 20 years total. I have to make up the difference somewhere.
I have a good question. What are the basic requirements for CA POST to transfer a cert from another state? Not what a department requires.

Im also interested in this thread. For example, how long does it take to top out the pay scale? And what are the costs to live out there? For example, home insurance high since there are so many fires? Thanks.

Net pay depends on a number of variables based on the deductions one has each period. Single, married, married with dependants, 401k's, insurances, retirement contributions, taxes, etc. That is a poor yardstick to use. It is better to know what the gross pay is and fiigure what you will face from that figure. Most deputies I know are cracking about $4500 - $5000 a month take home.

Riverside County has one of the highest foreclosure rates in the nation so you can find a nice home for next to nothing. If you drive through the Eastvale area, you'll see 3,500 square foot homes for $250,000.
An RSO deputy climbs twelve steps in the pay scale. After one maxes out he could start looking for special assignment pay / hazard pay / FTO pay or promotion. Don't forget that new deputies, save laterals who come from CAL Pers agencies, are required to pay their share of the CAL Pers deposit for their first three years.
