Looking through some older posts, I saw some links to "Thee Rant" forums. The majority of the posts were incredibly discouraging...a lot of badmouthing NYPD policies, the brass and IMPACT rookies...

I'm just wondering if theres anybody out there who actually LIKES working for the NYPD.

You'll meet people that Love working for the NYPD and you'll meet people that hate working for the NYPD.

But the person that hates something is much more quicker to voice out their opinion.

I have had a few interviews with a few different departments, and there is one question that I have heard during every interview: "How would you deal with a situation where your coworkers continuously complain about their job."

This has lead me to believe that some in law enforcement tend to spend a lot of time complaining about their jobs. But then again, If you think about it, this is true for nearly all careers. There will always be those that are not happy no matter what career field they are in. I am sure that there are many who work for the NYPD that love their job, so don't let that discourage you. If you don't like it, you can always do something else.

I actually love working in the NYPD. But I would say more than half the people you meet once you're on the job - especially ones with less than five years' experience - are relentlessly negative about the NYPD. People with more time on are generally more positive about things, which makes sense since once you're a top-pay PO you're looking at very decent money, decent vacation picks, and so on.

But, cops who've only got six months or a year on are generally pretty negative. It's really weird; they don't want to answer radio runs, they don't want to write summonses, they don't want to arrest anyone. Someone will come up and say "My child was supposed to come home from school four hours ago but I haven't seen them, and I can't find them anywhere," and they'll tell that person that they can't do anything about it. They don't want to write 61s or take DIRs, or even make memo book entries to show that they've been doing more than just hiding in a bodega for their entire tour.

It's very strange to me. Why did you become a cop if you don't want to do anything that cops are supposed to do? I guess maybe they're mad that they weren't assigned to ESU or Narcotics immediately after graduating the Academy...

having been a cop only 2 yrs, I LOVE what I do..well not ALWAYS, but I always answer my calls!!!

Now, I am taking the NYPD exam in OCt, and I know that I will have to start at the bottom, all over again. Which, doesnt bug me BECAUSE I can always move up!!! With a better chance of it there than here, in a small 40 officer dept.

I like working for the NYPD as well. As has been discussed numerous times on here, every job has its good things and its bad things, and NYPD is the same way.

Do not let your judgement be effected by all the negativity you read online about the NYPD, most of the posts are from the same people who seem to be miserable about everything.

If you think about it, John2008 was absolutely right. If you like your job and you enjoy what you do, you aren't going to sit online and make posts saying "i like my job." The only time you read things are when people have a problem with something.

In any case, YOU be the judge about it (oh, and judge it AFTER the academy, not during it lol). Don't let someone else tell you how to feel about the job.

Most job are inherently good ones. Most people you meet are standup. What happens is that there are times when the job and people will disappoint you.
Thats what you gotta work through.

I liked it, but so much depends on your command, bosses, partner, tour, assignment etc. My main disagreements were with department policies, not so much the job itself. But having gone to another department, I say, if you get the chance to go, go.

i have to agree with upstatenypd alot depends on where u work who u work with the bosses things like that....i use to be a very happy cop in my last pct granted the area was a complete **** hole but the bosses were awsome and the cops were absoulute aces. my new pct on the other had the bosses suck most of the cops are trying to figure out how to scam out of work and the hasidics rule everyone...and me i'm now disgruntled and my fiancee has to drag me out of bed so i will go to work cause i cant stand working there...so it really depends on who u work with and who ur bosses are

If you think you are going to come into an organization with 30,000+ people and not meet a few racists, biggots, and a-holes along the way, you are gonna have a wonderful time at any job you start.

There are bad apples in every bunch. You will learn who they are pretty quickly, stay away from them and you'll be fine.

Understood but at the sametime some black officers at some point would have to rely on these same racist and bigots to back them up.

I just feel their overall grumpiness comes from the fact that their pay is not competitive with other departments and the fact that they cannot get onto other LE jobs, so they blame the impact rookies and all the bosses for the NYPD demise

I don't think that's fair, their entitlement issues are astounding, they want the entire department to go back to being all white. They don't realize that corruption has always been an issue with NYPD from the begining until now but if you ask them its the great social experiment and NYPD brosses who ruined the department

I'm an African-American officer and I sometimes browse The Rant. Yes some people on there come off like racist *********s. Yeah there are some officers who make comments about people in the neighborhood I work in as a whole. There are little pictures and stickers on officer's lockers that aren't politically correct. But those I found to be few and far in between and I have no doubt that if I was to call a 13 or an 85 they wouldn't come running to help.

when you become an officer in the nypd or any police dept for that fact you lose your identity as to whether you are white, black, brown, yellow, green, or purple everyone simply becomes blue and we are all brothers that would and have died trying to protect one another. since i been in the nypd i have had black white asian hispanic partners i dont care about the color of your skin just that u have my back. And in a way the bosses are to blame about stuff but not as much as mayor bloomberg ray kelly and APD together they have lowered the standards and scraped the bottom of the barrel to get bodies and it has affected morale. NYPD pay is now more competative by 2010 an nypd officer will make more then mta at top pay. and this job does warp your perception and makes u a tad racist at times it doesnt happen to every officer but some people just cant take the things we see all the time. If you really want to talk about rascim look at charles barron or al sharpton read the book circle of six that will blow ur mind wide open..

I was curious about your attitude so I looked up your previous posts. It seems as if you were processing for NYPD and then recieved a summons by them a few weeks ago. Could that be why you have such a negative attitude toward this job right now?

You talking about the grumpiness, and entitlement and bashing officers saying that they can not get into other LE jobs when you have no knowledge of anything regarding this is pretty funny. You violated a law, you got a summons. The guys were just doing their job. You got a problem with the law, call mayor bloomberg and get the admin code changed.

We have people of every race, gender, creed, sexual orientation, etc all working together every day. We back eachother up, and don't care about all the other "colors". We are all blue.

I would love to know where you get your information like "they want the entire department to go back to being all white" from.

For one why are you looking up my post? What I said didn't have anything to do with why I received and summons and for your info it was dismissed but again it had nothing to do with what I notice about NYPD.

I notice just in your initial 1st paragraph you have an ax to grind, I don't have a problem with the law, since you want to look up my post and pick out this 1 particular post in which we were talking about what the nypd is doing with impact rookies. Why don't you read more of my post and you will see I don't have a problem with the law, So what are you getting at with your irrelevant assumptions?

And do you want to know where I get my info? Since you went looking through my post you would have saw that my uncle is an Lt in Manhattan south in which I mentioned. My brother has been on the job for 8 yrs now and my best friend has 10 yrs otj. I talk to them on a daily basis and they told me the attitudes have changed dramatically.

Not only that go read nypd rant. I don't have a negative view of NYPD its the people that give it a bad name and with that said I have nothing more to say about this so respond if you like.

If your uncle your brother and your friend are OTJ then you would know that most of NYPD rant is BULL**** and half of them were never even on the job and the other have are retired and talk about how much it was better back than when they were on teh job and how much rookies suck. Whatever is left are disgruntled employees that EVERY job has.

As far as NYPD rant I wouldn't entirely dismiss them as cooks I'm sure some of them spewing their nonsense are still otj.

Find me a large multi-cultural organization without internal bitching and problems...they don't exist.
I was at USNA for Rutgers football game two weeks ago, 37,000 filled the stadium...just about the number in NYPD....almost the alltime attendance for NAVY football history....and it was the size of NYPD.....think about that for a minute.

Don't let Thee Rant affect your opinion of the NYPD.

I visit that site on occasion and I do so for humor and to gauge some legitimate gripes about "the job." Many of the Ranters are retired and/or malcontents who have nothing better to do with their time than spend 16 hours of the day bashing Bloomberg and Popeye (Ray Kelly). Others simply have legitimate job gripes - but who doesn't. I'd like to rant about some of the supidity of my job.
