Is it true that officers tend to make a better salary in NY than other states? What is average base pay range in Western NY for a police officer?

Thanks:)

Not sure, but basically anything downstate pays good. You can make a decent living with almost any department from westchester down to long island.

County and State pays its officers very well. And now NYPD even pays decent money. Its very hard to say what the average pay range is. In NYS There are about 165,000 police/peace officers (# off the DCJS site) there are alot of departments in NYC that are small and top pay is only around 44k with them added in, NYC avg pay for LE is probably around 60k. On long island, average PD pay is around 85-95k. Alot of Departments make well over 100k. Not too sure about upstate, but departments like MTA Police, NYSP, Westchester PD, MVPD etc probably bring avg pay in the 70's-80's.

pay is better down here, around long island and the 5 counties, beacuse this is were all the ecnomic power is. Upstate pay is alittle lower, especially in the remains of Buffalo, due to a lower tax base.

Downstate pays more but the cost of living is ridiculous, so it pretty much balances out in my opinion.

NYSP has the better pay structure in state. They have a great starting salary, COL increases up to 10K for living in/near NYC.
You can transfer into the Adirondacks easily and use the buying power to find a nice house. If you then like to hunt and fish you are set.
A very nice home on a lake where my family has a summer camp is for sale for 300K. Homes off the lake are 125 or so.
Homes near Syracuse in great towns are 150.

Suffolk starts at 57k and moves up to 97k after 5 years of employment... plus a differential for nights... upstate pays in the 40s... I lived in upstate for 9 years and literally only saw 6 officers the entire time I was living there!! They are good hiders... or just not there...

Thanks for the replys, I looked into it and the dept. in the area that I live has starting pay set at 55k. It's a larger suburban dept. with about 200 officers.

I work for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. I am in my first year and I make $39,343 a year. In my 7th month, I will increase to about $43K a year. I continue in regular intervals until I top out upon my 5th anniversary at about $61K a year. That is for the regular patrol division. The pay is higher for investigators and supervisors, of course. And, all of that is subject to change for the better as our current contract ends Dec 31 2008. I understand that for the area, the MCSO is about average as far as pays goes. I do not have any hard numbers, but most patrol officers in the towns and villages in this county start at around $50K and top out near $75K. The towns of Greece, Fairport, Brighton, and East Rochester all pay extremely well. FYI, the City of Rochester is in Monroe County. And RPD starts at around $42K a year and in their 66th month, they all make about $70K a year.

well it's variable all over NY state. That's why state police get paid different across the state.
