I am interested in learning how to operate a handgun as my uncle, who I live with and who is retired NYPD, has 3 handguns in the house. I am pretty sure that I am able to operate the handgun when on our property, correct? I believe that is where my right to possess a handgun ends. Unless I go to the range with my uncle I guess I would not have a handgun to use as I cannot transport one of his firearms to the range by myself.

Are there any ranges on LI where they will give you a handgun to use there and instruct you on how to operate one properly?

I have always wanted to have a license to carry on LI but I guess that is really probably not going to happen.

I believe that any law abiding citizen with proper training and no mental illness should be allowed to possess a concealed weapon at any time, unfortunately this is not the case, I'm curious also as to hear what the general concensus on this issue is on this board.

search in ASK A COP.

This has been hammered a million times before.

I say this gets closed up before it gets out of hand.

You would fit right in in Virginia or Texas.

Move to Florida, you cannot be denied a CCDW permit as long as you fit the parameters for the permit;
1. no arrest record.
2. no known mental history.
3. pass the necessary school.

Ask your uncle to take you to a range. If you are under the age of 21 I wouldnt be doing anything with a hand gun as far as trying to transport it my self. If you are of age to legally posess a hand gun search google for ranges near your house and then get permission from your uncle to borrow his hand gun to go to the range with. I strongly suggest you ask him to take you so that he feels comfortable that you are safe with fire arms so that in the future if you want to go to the range by your self he will not worry about you. I know guns are fun to shoot but acicdents do happen so get all of the training you can before picking one up.

Just moved back up here from Florida actually. I think I would fit in in any area where the people like to take self responsibility for their own safety. I hear about firearm accidents but really there are no accidents, there is only carelessness and I am about as far from that as you can get. I will probably ask him, he himself, an ex NYPD for 20 years, wants me to get a gun but realizes how difficult it is in this area.
