I was in the ACS (Administration for Children's Services) building and I saw a bunch of people with a POLICE patch and ACS written on the back of their polo shirts. They had full duty belts with ASPs and cuffs and I think I saw one of the armed. Im not sure. Any information on this agency? I have never heard of them or seem them before.

I've never heard of this before. Maybe ACS is hiring Special Officers now so they go with case workers on certain cases?

I'm an ACS Police P.O.
Our NYC Civil Service title is Special officer.
We are NYS Peace Officers [unarmed].
Our functions defer from command to command.

Common tasks are; access control [we find weapons and narcotics during the course of], outer perimeter and vertical patrols, settle disputes between clients, safe guard remanded clients, issue summonses, make arrests, aided cases.

Some of us work out of the facilities that house children [they can be in ACS's care for various reasons including PINS {person in need of supervision}]. While others work out of the facilities that; hold meetings/visitations w. guardians/parents and their kids, counseling, mediation, and parental education.

We deal with assaults, & criminal mischief mostly. We make sure no kids are illegally taken from the facilities by anyone. Basically we keep the clients, staff, & facilities safe.

It's a pretty good job, hardly any stress.
Pay could be better =P

Thanks for the info Tor. The job seems to be pretty good. Does ACS Police have alot of overtime opportunities like other Special Officer positions in the city?

Only at the Commands that house clients. The other commands are in facilities that are not open 24 hours and are closed weekends and holidays. So in those commands you only get over time if people call out, or you get the occasional arrest. A benefit of being at those cmd.s is getting guaranteed weekends and paid holidays off though. Oh Top pay is 40k.

I actually have 5 yrs on. So to be honest i'm not sure what starting pay is these days. I think its 28k and top is 40k for the officer rank. There is like a 10% difference between all of the ranks.

CPS eh. God bless that is hard work. However a good CPS member can literally be the difference for a child's well being. Get ready for a TON of O.T. in that title. Hit me w/ a pm if you have any specific questions.

ACS Police doesn't have armed officers
They are currently calling off of the last civil service test. Once its exhausted they can take provisional hires. The next civil service test is supposed to be in either 2009 or 2010, or so the rumor goes.

Does ACS Police have their own RMP's? I have never seen one before.

They use unmarked vehicles.
They are actually in the process of coming up with a design to mark them.

New contract we're voting on is raising our pay by 8%.
4% the 1st yr & 4% the 2nd yr

Which gives officers a top pay of about 44k now =[

This is the contract being voted on by all Special Officer titles.

Is this contract for past years or is this for the next 2 years? It should be more, but it could be worse.
