NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has ordered all city agencies to cut their budgets as the city looks ahead to possible fallout from the nationwide financial crisis.

Bloomberg's budget director issued the order in a letter Tuesday. Agencies must submit their proposed cuts to the mayor by Oct. 8.

The cuts for this fiscal year must amount to 2.5 percent, or a total of $500 million citywide. Agency heads also must cut their spending for the following fiscal year by 5 percent, for a total of $1 billion in cuts.

no this is actually true was on the news today... its current news 2008... lots of it has to do with new york state budget cuts, decreasing real estate sales tax revenues, as well as decreased tax revenues from wall street, no word yet on whether or not this affects public safety ( nypd is already operating below authorized strength so doubtful) I wouldnt be too worried from an nypd point of view..but we will have to see more details of bloombergs requests

This is a fact. It came out of Bloombergs mouth. This will also have an impact on LE. This story was in the beginning at 10 along with FBI investigating Fanniemae, Lehman, and AGI on Fox 5.

Its looking like I will be searching for another job until they start processing for july.

they definetly can't do the hiring freeze that happened in the mid 70's

Usually with budget cuts in a city, Public Safety is not included due to the risk of the citizens. Also I don't think a hiring freeze would happen because the city just got a flood of applicants and people opening 2,3,4 yr old cases to get on the job. It wouldn't be the best morale booster. Just my opinion.

I was just starting to think about opening my case from 06 in the next few months in hopes of getting in by July. I seriously hope this doesnt hurt my ( or other peoples) chances. Suffolk and nassau look to be hurt from budget cuts as well.
