I apologize if this has been discussed already, but I couldnt seem to find anything with the search or on the web, but what are the different shifts the NYPD work? Are you given a choice or are you assigned one as a rookie? Does it depend on where you are placed?

There are liteally hundreds of shifts that the NYPD has depending on what details you work, if you are on patrol, impact, if you are a PO, sgt, detective, or higher rank, etc. There is no way to list all of them it would take forever.

Generally cops work 8 hour 35 minute shifts. You work 5 on 2 off ,then 5 on 3 off, then the cycle repeats itself. This is the most common work schedule for cops on regular patrol.
For cops on certain details, they can work 5 on 2 off and get 1.5 day vacation added to their vacation pool each month.
I hope this helps.

Yea thats helpful. Ever since the new contract, ive started to put some thought into the NYPD, eps since Nassau and suffolk are looking like distant hopes at the moment.

Nassau and Suffolk are always distant hopes for me. Its a $100 lotto ticket.
idrisbey,
A cop on regular patrol and NOT in impact does not work a scooter chart. They have for the most part, steady rdo. Impact cops have the 5 on 2 off/5 on 3 off.
