My fiance and I are gettin' hitched on January 31, 2009... so the time has come to start planning what we're going to do for our honeymoon.

In our minds, honeymoons = tropical... so we want someplace... well, tropical. We've been running through ideas, with low cost being a big part. We're looking at either a cruise or an all-inclusive resort type of thing. So far, Travelocity and Expedia have shown us some deals...

I, personally, would like a cruise to the Bahamas. She's up for either the cruise or the AI. We want whatever it is be from February 2nd to February 6-8th.

Any ideas from you folks on some good/low-cost ideas? Preferably under $2000... even lower would be perfect. I found a 4-night cruise to the Bahamas with Royal Caribbean for $1800.

P.S. CityCopDC, don't you go on a lot of cruises? How do you arrange them?

Princess and Royal Caribbean have some nice cruise trips. I've been to Jamacia on the Royal Caribbean. I've also went to St. Thomas,St. Barts,Virgin Islands and the Grand Caymans.

20 years ago, Cancun was very nice for my honeymoon.

Recently my wife and I enjoyed an all inclusive resort called Xcaret. It is south of Cancun. It doesn't have a true beach, but we enjoyed snorkeling in the inlet and you can always take a short taxi ride to the beach (the taxi ride is somewhat like a roller coaster ride, just not as safe).

Whatever you decide room service is a must.:)

Each other. A lot. It shouldn't matter where you go if you never see the outside of the bedroom.

How do you arrange them? Through the cruise line directly, or through a website like Travelocity or Expedia? dot coooooooooooooooooooooom.

Bearcat... I considered Guam, as well. I felt obligated to. Unfortunately, there would be a layover in Chicago, Tokyo, AND Saipan. We wouldn't get there until February 4th. So we'd get 2 days on the island if we're lucky... that wouldn't be enough time to bring back all my childhood memories...:D Whenever I get back to Guam, I'll nead at least 2 weeks, AT LEAST. :D

Chiller... is that location a resort or would I have book everything seperately? IE flights, hotel room, etc..

Check out a site like cruises.com. You can make your selections by cruise line, number of days, and destination.

If you really want to stay within a budget, you might want to stick with the all-inclusive option. A lot of the "fun stuff" shown on those cruise ship ads cost extra.

I've done 3 Mexico and 1 Carribean cruise. The Carribean cruise was by far the best. It was on Royal Carribean which is my favorite line. Stay in the room a lot. Don't get off in Jamaica. The Bahamas was awesome. The pyramids were too. The shore excursions can kill your pocket book and so can the liquor bill!

 I checked that site out. Found a 4-night stay in Nassau for ~$1500. In fine print it reads "this hotel is under construction***." I sort of wish they had gone into more detail... I'm gonna keep playing on that site for a little while. :)

***That hotel being Wyndham Nassau Resort

Edit: Apparently JetBlue has something against Wisconsin... not a single WI airport is listed. Closest thing to me is Chicago... lol. I can't see myself driving from near Green Bay to Chicago in the middle of winter... :p

Hokay. I did some searching, and this is what I've come up with so far:

4 night cruise to the Bahamas aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas departing the Port of Miami on Feb 2nd, 2009 at 5:00PM.

Now, because of the possibility of crappy weather in this wonderful state... my flight choice is this:

Depart from Appleton, WI at 7:20AM on Feb 1st and arrive in Miami at 3:12PM. This would give us some extra time in case of flight delays. Plus it would allow us some time in Miami to unwind and relax for a night at the Days Inn near Miami International Airport. On Feb 2nd, we would leave the airport courtesy of a free shuttle to the Port of Miami and check-in with the cruise ship.

We'd arrive back in Miami on Feb 6th at 9:00AM and depart for Wisconsin at 11:18AM. We'd arrive back here, to the vast, white, cold atmosphere at about 3:00PM.

I priced it out at approximately $1602.87. That includes the airfare, the cruise, and the one night hotel stay in Miami.

Good, yes?

I would say that is a good deal, my cruise in march is 7 days and that includes round trip air from Minneapolis to Miami but no hotel stay. The cost is about $2,000 for the Fiance and I.

You can do them through the cruiseline website or through one of the many online travel sites. I usually go directly to the cruiseline website. :)

I did a similar from Gran Forks,ND in 1st week of Feb quite a few years ago. DO it the way you have planned. Allow that extra day for travel. We left at below freezing, and arrived to about 80*. :D Me being from the South, I wore shorts to the airport in ND when we left.

Royal Carribean ROCKS!! Can't wait to do it again!

I'm already planning to wear shorts to the airport in Appleton when we leave. :D

The lady I booked through (on cruisecheap.com.. her name was Crystal) was incredibly nice. When I told her it a honeymoon she said the cruise line will usually provide free champagne when you board, have a "honeymooners party" type of thing, and provide a complimentary picture with the Captain. Needless to say, I'm pretty darn excited. I can't sleep right now... I should be, since I have to be the Sheriff's Department at 8am for Taser training.

What's the "kid situation" like on Royal Caribbean cruises? They aren't running around like dingos, are they?

Start off on the right foot. On your honeymoon leave the seat up, don't pick up your underwear, and don't, what ever you do, DON'T do any dishes. Oh, and try to sneak a sports game in between all the "fun". What, that is good advise.

What dishes would I do on a cruise? I'm paying for them to do my dishes for me! :D

I plan on peeing off the main deck of the ship and sending a pair of my boxers up the flagpole. :D

If they are, is it open season all year round and does the local council pay $5 per scalp? :D

Of course, and it may be a little out of your budget, but you could come here where the dingoes run around with kids, I mean like kids...

^ ahahahhaa....

First, congratulations on your engagement!

Royal Carribean is nice. I went on a cruise several years ago (okay, it was close to 10 years ago!!! holy crap!!).

anyway, the only part of your trip that you might want to re-think is that Days Inn stay in Miami. Days Inns are pretty dismal at best... Make sure you check reviews online to see what others have to say about it. If I were you, I'd be safe and switch to a Hampton Inn or something.

Otherwise, sounds like you have a lovely vacation planned!

next time you come to Florida, drive down to the Keys. Key West is a dream! :)

The stay at Days Inn isn't really meant to be a quality thing. We figured it would be best to gives ourselves a nice cushion of space in case of inclement weather. Besides, the only thing that needs to be comfortable is the bed, right? :p

I just meant in general, Days Inns are pretty grungy... even the beds are questionable. I made the mistake of booking one one time in Sarasota, and there was handwritten sign propped up on the front desk that said, "If you live within 50 miles of this hotel, you are not permitted to stay here". It was prostitution central.

It was too late in the day to start driving around in a strange town, plus it was dark outside, and i had no access to internet, so I was forced to stay there overnight. :( I pulled the comforter off the bed, slept fully clothed, and put one of my t-shirts over the pillow. The floor was sticky and gross, there was hair all over the bathroom. In short, it was a nightmare. Needless to say I checked out first thing in the morning and found something else. It gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about that place.

I guess it depends on what side of town you are on. Hopefully yours is one of the nicer ones!

BTW, here are some tripadvisor reviews for that particular hotel:

As you can expect, some are very good, and others are very bad. I usually see which outweighs the others.

yes, it might be worth it to save the luxury for the cruise, but personally, the thought of bugs and sticky floors gives me the incentive to pay a little extra for a slightly higher quality.

then again, you might end up with a pleasant and clean room. the problem is you never know until you get there.

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but if you do go on a cruise for your honeymoon make sure you tell the booking agent, your waitor, the concierge desk who ever that your on your honey moon. I know lots of people who have recieved free room upgrades, nice gifts in their room, invited to eat with the captian... It works with anniversaries also. The perks are worth it, and you dont have to be cheesy about it but telling one of those people or all of them you will surely end up being taken care of.

If you go royal carribean do the "adult scavenger hunt" i think its called quest, im not a very extroverted person and I had a blast. Make some friends cause you will need a team, and dont worry you wont ever see any of those people ever again... youll see when you get there lol. Anyhow do it, it was lots of fun and try to do the newlyweds game if you are up for it.

Have fun.

We did book our cruise with RC... when I booked it with the booking company I asked if there was anything special I had to do because it was a honeymoon cruise... and she said she would put a note on our... whatever it was she was sending to the cruise line. She said they'll generally have some type of honeymooner's party, free champagne when you board the ship, and a complimentary picture with the captain.

Is this scavenger hunt thing done while aboard the ship or on land somewhere?

It sounds like I'll have to drop the little "we're on our honeymoon" card a few more times. :D

The scavenger hunt, it all takes place in one of the big lounges where they usualy have karaoke on board. It was alot of fun, like I said if I knew going in what I was going to do there I would not have gone. Im very reserved and uptight usualy but I am also competitive and I wanted to win lol. Lets just say wear your good undies hahaha. The host calls out an item and sometimes they are riddles and a member of you team has to run up and give him the item and the first 3 teams there get points. So he wil say I need a female team member with a pair of male pants up here right now and hillarity ensues, or he will say I need a male team member up here with lipstick and guys wil run up with lipstick on and he will be like I didnt say you had to put it on you just had to bring it up lol its really fun. People get really into it there will be ppl diving on the floor running all over the place and just generally making an *** of themselves but its fun. And I forgot to add if you dont want to participate there are ppl that just watch too it is fun either way.

Have fun if you have any other questions about RC just ask I have been on once and my Girl has been on serveral times so we have a good bit of info. Oh and we ended up losing the quest not for lack of effort though.

SANDALS RESORT BAHAMAS! Nothing else even close. Been on the cruise and the all inclusive resort is hands down better, you wont regret it. All restaraunts 5-7 total included, that means drinks and dinner 24 hours a day. 2-3 pools, private beach at the resort so locals wont bother you. They also have a private island off the beach that you can go out to and theres even a restaraunt there. The only thing you pay for is special sight seeing trip outside the resort area. We stayed for a week and didn't leave except for one day to go to the straw market downtown, their flea market. Tipping is not allowed at the resort and no kids. If you tell them it's your honeymoon and stay for at least seven days I think they give you a free set of china. I'm not sure about some things but this is a lock. If you like snorkeling take your own masks. You can do some great snorkeling off the private island for free. I found part of an old pirate wine bottle. I promise you wont regret it.
