I was wondering if anyone has heard or received anything from the Monroe County Sheriff's Exam given November 17th, 2007. I scored an 85 on it and was ranked like 107 but never received anything. If anyone knows anything I would appreciate your info.

They only processed as far down as the "90" band. Those who scored 85 or below probably will not get processed.

They don't process strictly by list number like a lot of other agencies do. They process by band. After veterans points, there were 136 people who scored an 85. You could be #107 on the list, and I could be #243 on the list. As far as they're concerned, we are both #107 on the list because we have the same score. We would both get invites for further processing at the same time.

Last I heard, they were only going to put one class through the academy from this list. If they processed those who scored 85, they would have had too many candidates to process.

The short answer is: Don't get your hopes up with an 85.

One thought if your discouraged with trying to get hired here in Western NY and your not making much progress would be to consider Jobs in Charlotte NC or Raleigh don't end up waiting forever if you want to be a cop keep all your options open. The pay is not as high but You have a job sometimes you just need to weigh all options.

Yeah, I got the call for the agility test for them back in June (score of 90) but I had a sudden death in the family and had to go out of town for several days. :(

I'm also on the Erie County list and pased the agility there. But besides a "personal history review", which consisted of verifying your residency and other credentials, I have not heard from them. I think police hiring is going to be very restricted for quite awhile due to the economy/budget issues throughout the state.

I concur with hxd. They indeed did only process through the 90 band, so the only people who were considered scored a 90 or higher.

But, regarding the issue of having only one class from the list may or may not be true. The MCSO will be facing a wave of retirements over the next 12-18 months since the contract expires at the end of this year. Many deputies are already over their 20-year window and will likely want to jump ship under the current contract so their retirement pay is locked in. The fear is that if the contract negotiations somehow go south, and the retirement pay is somehow adjusted downward, many deputies now eligible to retire might be kicking themselves if they stay on through the entrance of the new contract next year.

Short answer, if you scored an 85, you may not get looked at right now. But, the list is good through the spring of 2009, so it's possible you might get looked at if staffing levels drop too low too fast.

Also bear in mind the Rochester Police Department is having a test this November and the application deadline is sometime in early October. RPD is having another academy class next spring. They are facing some serious staffing issues, so new officers will probably have the best luck getting their foot in the door by going to RPD to get started. You can always lateral once your year probation is up.

Thank you for those who responded. Ricker99, thank you for RPD suggestion. I am actually currently processing with them right now. I have an interview with my Background Officer on October 30th. I received an 85 on this exam as well. Hopefully it will be good enough.

I scored in the 80s on this test as well. I don't think there will be another for a while. Signed up to take RPD in November though.

Just a quick update. Thus far, MCSO has hired 16 people off the current list. A couple were in May, and the majority were in August. There was a huge number of people who declined the job. There was also a huge number of people who weren't offered the job because they didn't meet the residency requirements.

So far, the towns PDs (Greece, Brighton, Irondequoit, Gates, Webster, etc) have hired less than a half-dozen off the list.

I think I read the list was good for 1 year. Any idea when the next test might be?

The current list is set to expire at the end of February 2009. They usually have the option of extending the list up to two more years.

If they were going to have another exam this year, I'd expect them to time it so that it's on the same day as the NYSPP exam on November 15th. There hasn't been anything announced, so I don't see an exam happening this year.

I have received good information that MCSO will begin processing the next "band" of applications on the last civil service test. They have exhausted the list for people who scored 100, 95, and 90. Civil service always processes in batches of "threes", so the next batch of people eligible to be processed will have scored 85, 80, and 75. They expect to have a number of new recruits processed in time for a tentative academy start date in mid to late February 2009. The current academy already underway has the recruits who scored in the top batch of the list, 100 through 90. If you scored 85 to 75, keep your eyes and ears open.

RPD will have a lot of openings in the near future. You may or may not have heard that they are placing more officers on the street, and cutting down on RFD positions.

They give you an exam date for the jail test?

The jail exam is usually in April. List is established between June and August. They usually hold an exam every year.

The process has started. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office has begun processing the next band of applicants for Deputy Sheriff Road Patrol. If you scored an 85, they pulled your list from the civil service office on the 21st. Not sure why they also didn't pull the people who scored 80 and 75, but I imagine they will be doing so shortly. There were a lot of people who scored an 85 so I think it may take a while to sift that list down to a manageable bunch of folks to further process.

Ricker99,

Do you know this for certain? I too have noticed "Activity" for 10-21 from the civil service exam page. If we see an "activity date" does this always mean that we will receive a letter?

This letter was a canvass letter from the exam last April, not a notification of an upcoming exam. Like HXD said, usually they offer Jail Bureau exams in the Spring.

Ricker99,

Do you know this for certain? I too have noticed "Activity" for 10-21 from the civil service exam page. If we see an "activity date" does this always mean that we will receive a letter?

For certain? Well, nothing is ever certain. I have been through the process and can only comment on how my own process went, and can comment on what some people have heard from others currently in the academy. Remember that I'm only a "recruit", so my information is only as good as what gets trickled down to my lowly level. But I guess any information is better than none. The important thing to remember is that nothing is ever certain, and patience is absolutely vital. Patience is absolutely everything to landing any job in NY civil service, especially the MCSO. They are thankfully very selective on who they hire, and after jumping through all the hoops, there might be little notice given to start work after waiting for sometimes up to a whole year.

Everything depends on the budget. I have heard numbers anywhere from 5 to 25 new deputies to be hired for the next fiscal year. How many it actually comes down to depends on the complex negotiations that occur between the upper echelons of the sheriff's office and the county executive's office.

I'm currently in the academy class and they hired 15 deputies. We graduate the classroom portion the second week of Feb, and at that point they hope to have enough people processed to start a new class right away.

As I mentioned a while ago, the sheriff's office is facing a giant wave of retirements over the next 12-24 months. That, too, will affect how many deputies get hired for this next class.

My process was pretty quick. I took the test on 17 November 2007. I didn't get the test results until early March 2008. The list was established in early March 2008. I received a canvass letter in late April. The next step was a physical agility test given in late May I think? It might have been early June. After passing that test, the remaining candidates were invited for a written psychological exam. Those that passed that were invited to sit down for an oral board interview. In the meantime, you are given a huge background booklet to complete which lists everything about you...everything. If you passed that test, then you were scheduled for a polygraph exam. Even if you passed all those tests, the whole packet is then presented to the Sheriff himself and his command staff. They review all the packets, backgrounds, opinions of the testers, and determine who will be offered a job.

I was offered the job on 13 August 2008 with a report date of 25 August 2008 to start the academy! So once they decide they want you, you have VERY little time to react.

The academy is 25 weeks long. After that, you enter the field training portion and that lasts another 16 weeks. If you pass the field training portion, you are assigned to a line platoon and start working on your own.

I suppose that was more information than you were looking for! But, I'm sure it proved helpful.

Keep on keeping on.

Thank you ricker99 for the information.

I have not received a canvass letter yet for the next round of processing for Road Patrol.

Anyone here get one yet?

Just an update here...

I spoke with a nice woman from the county's human resources department today.

She told me that on Dec 15th, the board voted to extend eligibility for the Nov 07 road exam. So, it will not be expiring in February. Expect to see notification in the mail later this week.

The list is currently set to expire on Feb 28, 2010.

They also pulled numbers for the 85 band again today.
