GLOCK 22 HELP

I have a problem with a model 22, I am unable to release the spring tension to remove the cover plate. It appears that I have a damaged spring cup and or a spring problem. When I attempt to put the tool against the spring cup and push it down to release the pressure there is no give in the spring. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
